Bahrain GP: Bottas wins thrilling pole duel with Hamilton

Valtteri Bottas scored his first-ever Formula 1 pole position in Bahrain on Saturday night, beating Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by 0.023s. Hamilton laid down the benchmark with an opening lap of 1m28.792s, which eclipsed Bottas by 0.052s – thanks to a stunning final sector. But Bottas’s final effort allowed him to grab his maiden F1 pole with a lap of 1m28.769s. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was third, but almost half a second off the pace, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo splitting the Ferraris in fourth.
