The championship leader’s 1m14.670s lap, set on Pirelli’s new C6 soft compound, secured McLaren’s first Imola pole since 2005, underlining their dominance this season. Piastri’s final lap was a masterclass in precision, overcoming a scruffy final corner and a slight deficit in sector one to outpace Verstappen by just 0.034s.
