Hamilton hits stride after ‘underperforming' in 2019 qualifying

World Champion Lewis Hamilton says he is back to his best in qualifying after accepting he “underperformed” on Saturdays in the 2019 season. Hamilton claimed 11 victories last season but topped qualifying on only five occasions. Part of that was down to Ferrari’s one-lap speed, which enabled the team to score nine pole positions, but Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas also took five poles. This year Hamilton has claimed five pole positions to Bottas’ two, finishing a close runner-up to his team-mate on the occasions where he was second best.
