Vettel gives Formula 1 'shield' on track debut
– Formula 1 championship leader Sebastian Vettel has given the 'shield' – the proposed head protection device – its on track debut during the opening practice session for this weekend's British Grand Prix.Formula 1, overseen by governing body the FIA, has been striving to increase head protection for drivers in recent years, following a spate of incidents and near-misses.The FIA extensively trialled the halo device – which wrapped around the cockpit in the form of three struts – last year, with a view to its introduction for 2017, but it was ultimately delayed, and then abandoned.Instead, a canopy – dubbed the 'shield' – has now emerged as the favoured approach, and the...
