One-place grid penalty for Hulkenberg for tyre infringement

German Grand Prix – Nico Hulkenberg has received a one-place grid penalty for using a set of tyres in qualifying that should have been handed back to Pirelli after FP3. It is standard practice for teams to hand back sets of tyres used in free practice sessions so they enter qualifying with their usual six sets, which also see them through the race as well. Each set is electronically scanned to inform the FIA which sets are no longer being used. But Force India were found to be using one of the practice sets on Nico Hulkenberg’s car. The penalty drops Hulkenberg from seventh on the grid to eighth behind Valtteri Bottas.
