Alonso, Merhi pick up grid penalties

The FIA, Formula 1's governing body, has confirmed that Fernando Alonso and Roberto Merhi have been handed grid penalties for the Russian Grand Prix. The two Spanish drivers have been given the grid drops due to power unit element changes, with 35 places for Alonso and 20 for Merhi. Honda used its remaining four tokens prior to the Russian Grand Prix and opted to fit a brand new engine to Alonso's car for first practice, resulting in a 25-place penalty. McLaren then changed back to Alonso's Suzuka engine for FP2, saving the fresh elements for later in the season, but fitted new MGU-H and turbocharger components, giving him a further 10-place drop.
