Former Formula 1 racer and team owner Ligier dies

Former Formula 1 racing driver and team owner Guy Ligier has died age 85. The Frenchman, a former rugby player and rowing champion, raced in 12 grands prix between 1966 and 67’, recording a best finish of sixth at the 1967 German Grand Prix. After retiring from driving, Ligier bought Matra Sports in 1974, returning to F1 two years later with his own team. The Ligier team claimed its first pole at the 1976 Italian Grand Prix, courtesy of French racer Jacques Laffite, with its first win coming the following year in Sweden. Ligier scored nine poles and wins, 11 fastest laps, and a best finish of second in the constructors’ championship in 1980 with the white and blue Gitanes sponsored...
