Euro F3 champ Ocon stars on F1 debut
Newly crowned FIA European F3 champion Esteban Ocon has impressed Lotus bosses following a successful Formula 1 test debut at Valencia.
The 18-year-old Frenchman, who is part of the Lotus young driver program, completed more than 650km of running behind the wheel of a 2012 specification Lotus E20 throughout the two-day test.
Despite his inexperience of F1 machinery, Ocon impressed Lotus’ trackside operations manager Alan Permane, who described the performance as “exceptional”.
Ocon swept to nine victories in his maiden European F3 Championship campaign, claiming the title ahead of Tom Blomqvist and new Toro Rosso recruit Max Verstappen.
