Mercedes confirms Hamilton grid penalty
Lewis Hamilton will take at least a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change following his crash in qualifying for the German Grand Prix. A front right brake disc failure pitched Hamilton in to a spin under braking for the Turn 13 hairpin, with his Mercedes hitting the tyre barrier head-on. Following overnight inspections, the team has confirmed that the gearbox was damaged in the incident and will need to be changed. We can confirm that @LewisHamilton's gearbox will be changed for the race owing to accident damage incurred yesterday. 5 place penalty.— MERCEDES AMG F1 (@MercedesAMGF1) July 20, 2014
