Irvine labels double points rule as ‘insanity'

Red Bull/Getty Images Former Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine has criticised the sport following the decision to award double points for the final round of the season. Under the new sporting regulations, the final round of the season will count for double points, meaning that 50 points will be awarded to the winner of next year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, rather than the usual 25. Irvine raced for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar in a career spanning a decade, finishing as runner-up to Mika Hakkinen in 1999. 'I think Formula One has lost its way,' he told Belfast Telegraph.
