Alonso runner-up in championship, but with barren streak

Fernando Alonso may have secured the runners-up spot in the drivers’ championship this season but the Spaniard has hardly done it in style. Perhaps Sebastian Vettel’s strongest challenger for the title in the early part of the season, the Ferrari driver’s results have trailed off in the latter part of the campaign. After finishing fifth at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, it marked Alonso’s fifth straight race without standing on the podium – his worst run since joining Ferrari.
