Loss of fifth gear scuppers Vettel's chance of victory

Sebastian Vettel has confirmed that it was a gearbox issue that caused his retirement from the British Grand Prix. The loss of fifth gear stopped his chances of winning the race after inheriting the lead from Lewis Hamilton early on. The German said in a team statement: 'We had a gearbox issue, I think fifth gear broke and damaged the rest of the gearbox as well, so it was not possible to carry on. It's a shame because we were in a good position and it's a nice race to win here, so year I guess we have to come back next year and try again.'
